Chittodvega (Anxiety) Then and Now - Seminars in Ayurveda

September 28, 2020 with Sujatha Reddy, AD, MSE

Our exploration of chittodvega (anxiety) will draw from the Charaka Samhita, the work of Sushruta, and The Polyvagal Theory by Steven Porges. Chittodvega as a psychological and physiological state is characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components. We will explore the Ayurvedic principle of “like increases like and opposites balance” as the key to reducing anxiety and restoring balance to the manovaha srotas.

Sujatha Reddy graduated as an Ayurvedic Doctor from Bangalore University, India, in 1988; is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor; and has an MSE in mental health counseling from the University of Dayton in Ohio. She is a COLORAMA board member and runs the Governance committee. She owns and operates Sonder Center Whole Person Wellness Center in Lakewood, Colorado.

NAMACB Exams Are Ongoing

Participation in the NAMACB board certification exams remains a critical component of the growth of the Ayurvedic profession and the advancement of graduates to Professional Membership at the Ayurvedic Health Counselor (AHC) and Ayurvedic Practitioner (AP) levels. We want you to know that despite the limitations imposed by COVID-19, there are exam slots available in August/September for qualified applicants to take the AHC and the AP exams from their home computer.

Due to the financial constraints associated with COVID-19, the NAMACB is offering a 20% discount on the exam through December 31, 2020.

We urge Professional Members who are supervising new graduates and those of you who have newly graduated colleagues to let these potential exam candidates know about this opportunity.

The many of you in our General Membership who are qualified to sit for the exam may also want to consider if this might be the right time for you to take it!

If you have any questions, please contact us at the following address: NAMACB@ayurvedanama.org.

Western Herbs for Ayurvedic Practitioners

August 24, 2020 with Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa, AD, DN-C, RH

Are you a well-educated Ayurvedic practitioner who uses Ayurvedic herbs, but would like to extend your skill set to include Western herbs? These days, most Ayurvedic students learn at least a little about Ayurvedic herbs in Ayurveda school. What they don’t learn, though, is anything about Western herbs. We will delve deeply into the similarities and differences between Western and Ayurvedic herbalism and how to connect the knowledge you already have with effective Western herbalism in your clinic or practice.

If you are ready to take your herbal knowledge to the next level and use all those unfamiliar herbs your clients are bringing in, let’s get together and spend this class in the realm of Western herbs for Ayurvedic practitioners.

Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa is an herbalist, nutritionist, yoga teacher, and educator who has been making holistic health approaches palatable to the modern mind for over 40 years. He was the herbal apprentice of an Ayurvedic master, Yogi Bhajan, for 32 years, and is the first person to be professionally certified in both herbalism and Ayurveda in the U.S. He is President Emeritus of the American Herbalists Guild and Director Emeritus of NAMA.

Each mingle will run for 60-minutes and begin with a brief introduction and presentations by our panelists. The remainder of forum’s time will then be interactive and allow us, NAMA Student Members, to ask our questions of professionals. Don’t be shy!

Mission: To promote and sustain an organizational culture of diversity, inclusion, and transparency. To develop a broad range of opportunities for community involvement; to ensure an accessible path to all roles within the Ayurvedic profession and within NAMA for all members regardless of their race, ethnicity, cultural identity, religious affiliation, gender or sexual orientation, age, or disability status; and to actively support the inclusion of a diverse cross-section of our membership in our organizational framework.

Committee Chair:

Tesia Love is a board certified Ayurvedic Practitioner (NAMACB) from Charlotte, NC where she practices as a Clinical Ayurveda Specialist, 500-hour Yoga Teacher and Licensed Massage & Bodywork Therapist offering consultations, Ayurvedic body therapies and women's health bodywork.

Tesia has been a NAMA member since 2013, and was employed as NAMA's membership manager from 2015 - 2018 after having volunteered on the Membership Committee and 2015 Conference Planning Committee. As membership manager, she also served as chair of the Membership Committee, chair of the inaugural Continuing Education Subcommittee, and provided guidance and support to the Students, Schools and Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy Subcommittees.

In addition to her professional path in Ayurveda, Tesia has a background in nonprofit management and marketing communications. She is a graduate of the California College of Ayurveda, Duke Integrative Medicine’s Integrative Health Coach program, and holds a Master of Arts in Media and Public Affairs.

"I look forward to serving NAMA as chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee, and working with other members to help ensure NAMA has a culture of diversity, equitable inclusion, anti-racism and accessibility."
